The AdBlock for Safari app, first released in 2018, is the 'next-generation' version of the AdBlock for Safari extension that has been around since 2009. Although you can still use the old AdBlock extension for now, Apple is making Safari extensions obsolete. We recommend that you switch to the new app by the end of the year.

The AdBlock for Safari app consists of three components:

  1. AdBlock Engine, a browser extension that uses content blocking rules (filter lists) to determine what to block and hide on websites you visit

  2. AdBlock Icon, a browser extension that adds a button to the Safari toolbar, allowing you to control the AdBlock app from within Safari

  3. The AdBlock app, where you can manage your filter list subscriptions and whitelist (sites where you have allowed ads to appear)

Both extensions are required (and need to be enabled) for the AdBlock app to work.

  1. Find AdBlock in the Mac App Store and click Get.
(After the first time you install the app, you won't see the 'Get' button again. If you need to reinstall it, start at Step 2.)
  2. Click Install.
  3. After the app is installed, click Open. The AdBlock app window opens.
  4. Click Enable AdBlock in Safari. The Safari Extensions Preferences window opens.
  5. Select the check boxes next to both AdBlock Engine and AdBlock Icon.
(If our legacy extension is still installed, deselect the check box next to AdBlock to disable it. You may leave the legacy extension installed but disabled until you make sure the app includes the features you need. Then go ahead and uninstall the extension in Safari Preferences Extensions.)
  6. Click the AdBlock icon in the MacOS menu bar and select Start AdBlock at Login if it isn't already.
  7. Close the AdBlock app window, but leave the app running so that it can update your filter lists in the background.

AdBlock is now set up to block annoying ads on every web page you visit. Learn how you can customize how and where AdBlock works or uninstall it.
